Abstract
U protekla dva desetljeća, a i ranije, svijet je svjedočio pojavi novih virusa, njihovom rasprostranjivanju i izazivanju zaraza sa često smrtonosnim posljedicama. Većina „novih“ virusnih oboljenja su rezultat okolišnih poremećaja koji povećavaju kontakt ljudi sa životinjskim vektorima starih virusa, a promjena u ljudskom ponašanju im je omogućila da se rasprostrane. Međutim, pravi novonastali virusi sa smrtonosnim potencijalom ili mogućnosti da se rasprostrane po cijelom svijetu su nastali kod životinja kao posljedica mutacija ili genetičkih rekombinacija između virusa. Ove zaraze predstavljaju velik ekonomski i zdravstveni problem za ljudsko društvo, a u slučaju bioterorizma i prijetnju za javnu sigurnost. Uzevši u obzir promjenjivost samih virusa i neizbježnost promjene našeg okoliša, moramo biti spremni na evoluciju novih virusnih bolesti.
Abstract (english)
Over the last two decades, and even earlier, the world has witnessed the emergence of new viruses, their spreading and disease outbreaks often with deadly outcome. Most "new" viral diseases result from environmental disruptions that increase human contact with animal vectors of old viruses, whilst changes in human behaviour have allowed them to spread. However, truly novel viruses with lethal potential or capacity for global spread have emerged in animals as a consequence of mutations or genetic recombination between viruses. These outbreaks impose a big economic and health problem for mankind, and even for public security, in case of bioterrorism. Given the mutability of viruses and the inevitability of environmental change, we must be prepared for the evolution of new virus diseases.
