Abstract

Koncept mase kompleksan je pojam u fizici. Definicije mase mijenjale su se tijekom 19. i 20. stoljeća. Kako se mijenjala definicija mase, tako se popratno mijenjala i definicija relativističke mase. Mnogo fizičara se i danas zalaže za relativističku masu, iako je kao koncept odbačen početkom 20. stoljeća. Relativizam, kao novi koncept predstavljen u 20. stoljeću, bazira se na četverodimenzionalnom Minkowski prostorvremenu. Bezmasene čestice, kao što su fotoni, nemaju energiju mirovanja, stoga se gibaju brzinom svjetlosti (odatle i sam naziv brzina svjetlosti). Eddingtonov pokus mjerenja otklona zraka svjetlosti zvijezda zbog Sunca potvrdio je Einsteinovu opću teoriju relativnosti.

Abstract (english)

The concept of mass is a complex topic in physics. Definitions of mass have been changed during 19. and 20. century. The definition of relativistic mass has also been a controversial topic. Many physicists, still use the relativistic mass even when the concept was rejected at the beginning of 20. century. Relativistic physics is a new approach introduced in 20. century, and is based on four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. Massless particles, such as photons, don't have rest energy, so they travel at the speed of light (from there comes the name the speed of light). Eddington's experiment of measuring the deviation of the light rays because of the Sun confirmed Einstein's general theory of relativism.
