Abstract

Kornjače pripadaju u razred gmazova (Reptilia). Kod većine gmazova prisutna je determinacija spola
uvjetovana temperaturom. Determinacija spola dijeli se na genotipski određenu determinaciju spola (GSD)
i determinaciju spola određenu okolišnim faktorima (ESD), pod koju spada determinacija spola određena
temperaturom (TSD). Unutar skupine kornjača mehanizmi determinacije spola mogu se znatno razlikovati.
Kod kornjača su prisutne i TSD i GSD te njihovi različiti tipovi. Na spol kornjača s TSD utječe temperatura
tijekom inkubacije te ovisno o temperaturi omjer spolova mladih može varirati. Zbog toga, globalno
zatopljenje može imati negativan utjecaj na njihove populacije. Na nekim gnijezdilištima diljem svijeta već
je primijećen veći udio ženki u gnijezdima u odnosu na mužjake. Moguće je da će se kornjače s vremenom
prilagoditi na promjene no njihova spora evolucija ne ide u prilog toj teoriji. Kornjače su jedna od
najugroženijih skupina kralježnjaka. Uzrok njihove ugroženosti je uglavnom čovjek, a globalno zatopljenje
je samo jedan od načina kako čovjek negativno utječe na populacije kornjača.

Abstract (english)

Turtles belong to reptiles, phyllum Reptilia. Most reptile species exhibit temperature-dependent sex
determination. Sex determination is divided into genotypic sex determination (GSD) and environmental
sex determination (ESD), which includes temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD). In turtles, the
mechanisms of sex determination can vary considerably. In turtles, both TSD and GSD and their different
types are present. The sex of turtles with TSD is affected by the temperature during incubation, and
depending on the temperature the sex ratio of the hatchlings can vary. Because of this, global warming can
have a negative impact on their populations. A higher proportion of females in nests than males has
already been observed in some nesting sites around the world. It is possible that the turtles will eventually
adapt to the changes, but their slow evolution does not support that theory. Turtles are one of the most
endangered groups of vertebrates. The cause of their endangerment are mainly humans. Global warming is
only one of the ways in which humans negatively affect turtle populations.
