Abstract

Uspostavom viviparnosti nastaje konflikt interesa rastućeg fetusa i majke koji stvara prostor za
razvoj velikog spektra morfološki različitih struktura među kojima je i placenta. Iako sve
placente dijele zajedničku ulogu smatraju se morfološki najmanje konzerviranim organom.
Evolucija placente je konvergentna na više razina uključujući i molekularnu. U ovome radu
predstavit ću fetalne membrane kao osnovu za nastanak reproduktivnih struktura svih Amniota
i obrasce nastanka placente iz navedenih. Opisat ću selektivne pritiske koji su utjecali na razvoj
placente kao i molekularnu pozadinu tih procesa. Naposljetku, predstavit ću rekonstrukciju
izgleda ancestralne placente na temelju filogenetičkih istraživanja.

Abstract (english)

Establishment of viviparity creates a conflict of interest between the growing fetus and the
mother, which leads to the development of a large spectrum of morphologically different
structures, including the placenta. Although all placentas share a common role, they are
considered morphologically the least conserved organ. The evolution of the placenta is
convergent at several levels, including the molecular one. In this paper, I will present fetal
membranes as the basis for the formation of reproductive structures of all Amniotes and the
patterns of formation of the placenta from the aforementioned. I will describe the selective
pressures that influenced the development of the placenta as well as the molecular background
of these processes. Finally, I will present a reconstruction of the ancestral placenta based on
phylogenetic research.
