Abstract

Viralna infekcija slobodno-živućih ameba prvi je put zabilježena 2003. godine, a virus u pitanju
je zbog veličine čestice, ali i genoma, proglašen prvim divovskim virusom. Nakon tog otkrića
brojni su divovski virusi opisani u slobodno-živućim amebama, ali i u drugim skupinama eukariota.
Divovski virusi djeluju tako da mijenjaju unutarstanični okoliš ameboidnih protozoa, što na razne
načine utječe na replikaciju virusa te širenje virusa u nove domaćine. Ovaj rad opisuje značajke
interakcija između stanica ameboidnih protozoa i čestica divovskih virusa koje se događaju
prilikom infekcije. Razumijevanje mehanizama tih interakcija moglo bi razjasniti molekularne
procese zaslužne za pravilno funkcioniranje replikacijskog ciklusa u patogenih virusa srodnih
divovskim virusima.

Abstract (english)

Viral infection of free-living ameboid protozoa was observed for the first time in 2003. The
virus in question was significantly bigger than other viruses, both particle and genome-wise, and
therefore appointed the first giant virus. Since then, numerous giant viruses have been discovered
in free-living amoebae, but also in other groups of eukaryotes. Giant viruses modulate the
intracellular environment of amoebae, which works in different ways in regard to viral replication
and dispersion to new hosts. This paper describes the characteristics of interactions between the
amoeba cell and the giant virus particle during viral infection. Understanding of mechanisms
included in these interactions could explain the molecular processes behind replication cycles in
pathogenic viruses closely related to giant viruses.
