Abstract

U uvodnom poglavlju se upoznajemo sa procesima iz područja biologije koji se mogu modelirati upotrebom procesa grananja. U trećem poglavlju se promatra specifičan slučaj Bellman-Harrisovog procesa, Galton-Watsonov proces. Proces opisuje populaciju jedinki koje imaju jednak životni vijek i svaka daje slučajan broj potomaka nezavisno od drugih s istom fiksnom distribucijom. Odredili smo očekivani broj jedinki unutar generacije te dali Fundamentalni teorem koji govori kako odrediti vjerojatnost izumiranja populacije. Zatim smo proučili asimptotsko ponašanje procesa. Prvi primjer prikazuje kako odrediti izraz koji govori hoće li populacija izumrijeti koristeći teoriju Galton-Watsonovog procesa. U drugom primjeru se primjenjuje Yaglomov teorem za analizu asimptotskog ponašanja subkritičnog procesa. Četvrto poglavlje posvećeno je generaliziranom procesu grananja, Bellman-Harrisovom procesu, koji broji ukupan broj aktivnih čestica u danom trenutku. Počinje od jedne jedinke u trenutku \(t=0\) koja je aktivna neko slučajno vrijeme \tau\) s funkcijom distribucije \(G(\tau)\). Po umiranju, jedinka se podijeli na slučajan broj identičnih jedinki, čiji je životni vijek nezavisan i jednako distribuiran s funkcijom distribucije\(G\). Broj potomaka svake jedinke je slučajan i jednako distribuiran kao i broj potomaka originalne jedinke. Izveli smo integralnu jednadžbu za funkciju izvodnicu vjerojatnosti broja jedinki u trenutku \(t\) te smo, korištenjem teorije obnavljanja, odredili asimptotiku očekivanog broja jedinki u trenutku \(t\). Preciznije, promatramo eksperiment statmokineze, tj. blokiranje stanične diobe kako bi se stanice postupno nakupljale u fazi mitoze staničnog ciklusa. Modeliranjem staničnog ciklusa Bellman-Harrisovim procesom dolazimo do rezultata kojima možemo odrediti stopu rasta populacije te procjenu trajanja faza ciklusa.

Abstract (english)

In the opening chapter, we familiarize ourselves with processes from biology that can be modeled using branching processes. The described examples raise questions that motivate further exploration of these processes. The second chapter introduces basic definitions and results necessary for understanding the claims and examples in the rest of the thesis. It encompasses the theory of probability, random processes, and probability generating functions. As the main application of branching processes is in biology, explanations of mentioned biological concepts are also provided. The third chapter examines a specific case of the Bellman-Harris process, the Galton- Watson process. The process describes a population of individuals with equal lifespans, each producing a random number of offspring independently of others, with the same fixed distribution. We determine the expected number of individuals within a generation and provide the Fundamental Theorem, which explains how to determine the probability of extinction. We then study the asymptotics of the process. The chapter concludes with two examples applying the model in biology. The first example illustrates how to determine an expression predicting whether the population will go extinct using the theory of the Galton-Watson process.
