Abstract

Bisfenol A (BPA) je industrijska kemijska tvar široko korištena u proizvodnji polikarbonatnih plastika i epoksidnih smola, prisutnih u svakodnevnim proizvodima. Ovaj rad predstavlja pregled dosadašnjih toksikoloških i in vitro istraživanja te istraživanja na životinjama o utjecaju bisfenola A na muški reproduktivni sustav. Toksikološka istraživanja na ljudima pokazala su da izlaganje bisfenolu A uzrokuje smanjenu kvalitetu spermija, promjene u razinama hormona i dodatne reproduktivne poremećaje, čime se ovaj spoj svrstava u endokrine disruptore, Endokrini disruptori su spojevi koji negativno utječu na funkciju endokrinog sustava i time narušavaju zdravstveno stanje organizama. In vitro istraživanja pokazuju štetne učinke bisfenola A na Leydigove i Sertolijeve stanice, koje su neophodne za proizvodnju testosterona i spermatogenezu. Bisfenol A izaziva oksidativni stres, oštećenja DNA i apoptozu u tim stanicama, ometajući njihovu normalnu funkciju i narušavajući spermatogenezu. Ova istraživanja također ističu potencijalne transgeneracijske učinke, što ukazuje na to da bisfenol A može utjecati i na izravno izložene pojedince i na njihovo potomstvo. Buduća istraživanja trebala bi se usredotočiti na razjašnjavanje detaljnih mehanizama djelovanja kako bi se mogli razviti postupci zaštite te uvesti regulatorne mjere koje su važne za ublažavanje rizika izloženosti bisfenolu A i zaštitu javnog zdravlja.

Abstract (english)

Bisphenol A (BPA) is industrial chemical widely used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, found in numerous consumer products. This bachelor thesis reviews epidemiological, in vitro, and animal studies of bisphenol A's impact on the male reproductive system. Epidemiological studies have shown that exposure to bisphenol A causes reduced sperm quality, changes in hormone levels and additional reproductive disorders, which classifies this compound as an endocrine disruptor. Endocrine disruptors are compounds that negatively affect the function of the endocrine system and thus impair the health of organism. In vitro studies demonstrate bisphenol A's harmful effects on Leydig and Sertoli cells, which are essential for testosterone production and spermatogenesis. Bisphenol A induces oxidative stress, DNA damage and apoptosis in these cells, disrupting normal function and spermatogenesis. These studies also highlight potential transgenerational effects, indicating that bisphenol A can impact both directly exposed individuals and their progeny. Future research should focus on clarification of the precise action mechanisms to develop protection procedures and regulatory measures which will reduce bisphenol A exposure risks and protect public health.
