Abstract

Ljudsko tijelo je dom za 10 14 mikroba i 10 15 virusa. Mikrobi naseljavaju sve površine tijela koje su u dodiru s okolišem. Održavanje stalnog sastava mikrobnih populacija je važno za zdravlje čovjeka. Duga koevolucija dovela je do složenih interakcija između ljudskog imunološkog sustava i simbiotskih mikroba. U odsustvu pojedinih vrsta mikroba, imunološki sustav se neće normalno razviti. Neke terapije tumora stimuliraju naš imunološki sustav. Upalni odgovori igraju odlučujuću u različitim fazama razvoja tumora i u reakcijama tumora na terapije. Nedavna istraživanja na miševima su pokazala da mikrobi u probavilu utječu na nekoliko vrsta antitumorski terapije koje se često koriste u liječenju čovjeka: imunoterapiju CpG-oligonukleotidima i kemoterapije spojevima platine, ciklofosfamidom i kampotekinom. Pacijenti obično nakon terapije dobivaju antibiotike kako bi se spriječile infekcije do kojih dolazi zbog oslabljenog imunološkog sustava. Upotreba antibiotika dovodi do smanjenja broja određenih bakterija što rezultira smanjenom učinkovitošću terapije. Ovi rezultati bi mogli imati veliki utjecaj na terapije tumora u budućnosti.

Abstract (english)

Human body is home to 10 14 microbes i 10 15 viruses. Microbes colonize all of the surfaces of the body that are exposed to the environment. It is important for human health to maintain constant composition of microbial populations. Long coevolution has led to complex interactions between human immune system and symbiotic microbes. In the absence of certain species of microbes, immune system will not develop normally. Some tumor therapies stimulate our immune system. Inflammatory responses play decisive roles at different stages of tumor development and reactions to therapy. Recent studies on mice showed that gut microbes affect few types of antitumor therapies which are often used in human treatment: CpG-oligonucleotide immunotherapy and platinum, cyclophosphamide and campothecin chemotherapy. Cancer patients usually get antibiotics after therapy to prevent possible infections due to weakened immune system. The use of antibiotics reduces the number of certain bacteria which results in decreased therapy efficiency. These findings could have major impact on tumor therapies in the future.
