Abstract

Iako je pojava degradacije zemljišta u Južnoj Europi prisutna još iz davnina, brojni su fizičkogeografski i društvenogeografski čimbenici utjecali na intenzifikaciju ovog procesa od sredine 20. stoljeća. Zbog povećane je sušnosti i djelovanja čovjeka smanjena kvaliteta tla i količina otjecanja vode. U aridnim je dijelovima Južne Europe korištenje vode u stalnom porastu kao posljedica litoralizacije i porasta uporabe vode po stanovniku (poljoprivreda, industrija, domaćinstva). S obzirom na to da dezertifikacija smanjuje mogućnost vodoopskrbe, u radu su u obliku kartografskih prikaza, dijagrama i tablica prikazani raspodjela količine padalina, udio obnovljivih vodnih resursa, dostupnost vode, raspodjela otjecanja i dinamika crpljenja vode. Značajnija je pažnja posvećena Španjolskoj, Italiji i Grčkoj koje se izdvajaju kao države izrazito osjetljive na dezertifikaciju. Navedeni su uzroci i posljedice, ali i prijedlozi za ublažavanje fenomena dezertifikacije u Južnoj Europi. Da bi se ovaj kompleksni problem mogao riješiti, potreban je multidisciplinarni pristup i edukacija stanovništva o trenutačnom stanju i potencijalnim prijetnjama.

Abstract (english)

Although the phenomenon of land degradation in Southern Europe has been present since ancient times, numerous physical- and social-geographic factors have influenced the intensification of this process since the mid-20th century. The combination of increased dryness and man's impact have stimulated the decrease in the quality of the soil and the amount of water flow. In arid parts of Southern Europe water use is constantly increasing as a result of littoralization and intensification of water usage per capita (agriculture, industry, households). Since desertification reduces the amount of water supply, the paper presents the distribution of precipitation amounts, the share of renewable water resources, water availability, the flow distribution and the water drainage dynamics in the form of maps, diagrams and tables. Significant attention is devoted to Spain, Italy and Greece, which stand out as being extremely vulnerable to desertification. Both the causes and consequences are listed, as well as suggestions for mitigating the phenomenon of desertification in South Europe. In order to solve this complex problem, a multidisciplinary approach and education of the population about the current situation and potential threats is needed.
