Abstract
Laserska dioda je poluvodičko optičko pojačalo s optičkom povratnom vezom. Poluvodičko optičko pojačalo je propusno polarizirani jako dopirani p+-n+ spoj napravljen od poluvodičkog materijala s tzv. direktnim energijskim procjepom. Pobuđenje aktivnih atoma postiže se prolaskom struje kroz medij, nakon čega dolazi do emisije svjetlosti i optičkog pojačanja. Optičku povratnu vezu stvara refleksija svjetlosti na ”unutarnjim zrcalima” koja se dobivanju kalanjem poluvodičkog materijala po kristalnim ravninama (stvarajući Fabry-Perot rezonator). Obzirom da poluvodički materijal ima visoki indeks loma u odnosu na zrak/vakuum (n~3.5), koeficijent refleksije je dovoljno visok da osigura jaku optičku povratnu vezu, pretvarajući tako optičko pojačalo u optički oscilator, odnosno u laser. U diplomskom radu bit će opisana fizička svojstva poluvodičkih laserskih dioda, princip rada diodnih lasera i različite mogućnosti njihove primjene. U demonstracijskom eksperimentu bit će istražena i njihova osnovna svojstva.

Laser diode is semiconductor optical amplifier with optical feedback. Semiconductor optical amplifier is forward biased highly doped p+-n+ junction made of semiconductor material with direct energy gap. Excitation of active atoms is achieved with current passing through medium, followed by emission of light and optical amplification. Optical feedback is created by reflection on ”internal mirrors” which are made by cleaving the crystal at crystal plains, thus creating Fabry-Perot resonator. Because semiconductor material has high index of refraction compared to air/vacuum (n~3.5), coefficient of reflection is high enough to ensure high optical feedback, thus converting optical amplifier into optical resonator, or laser. This work will describe physical characteristics of semiconductor diode lasers, principle of work of laser diode and possibilities of their applications. Their basic characteristic will also be researched through demonstration experiment.
