Abstract

Bjesnoća je virusna bolest koja uzrokuje akutni encefalitis, prepoznatljiva u urbanom i silvatičnom obliku. Prenosi se među sisavcima, najčešće ugrizom. Virus bjesnoće je RNA virus metkastog oblika iz roda Lyssavirus i porodice Rhabdoviridae. Neurotropan je i preko završetaka aksona retrogradno putuje do centralnog živčanog sustava. Razvoj bolesti odvija se u tri faze, ekscitacijskoj, paralitičkoj i prodromalnoj. Kada se pojave klinički simptomi, smrt je neizbježna. Problem bjesnoće rješava se prevencijom (vakcinacijom životinja i ljudi koji su u rizičnoj skupini) i post-ekspocizijskom vakcinacijom u što kraćem vremenskom razmaku od ugriza. Najuspješniju kombinaciju cjepiva čine humani anti-rabies imunoglobulin i viroidne čestice izolirane iz kultura humanih stanica. Bjesnoća se vjerojatno proširila iz Europe, a danas je prisutna na svim kontinentima osim Australije.

Abstract (english)

Rabies is a viral disease that causes acute encephalytis. It exists in urban and sylvatic form, and is transferred among mammals, most commonly by bite. Rabies virus is a bulletshaped RNA virus belonging to the genus Lyssavirus in the Rhabdoviridae family. It is neurotropic and travels retrogradely from axon endings to central nervous system. Disease development consists of prodromal, excitation and paralytic phase. Once the clinical symptoms develop, death is inevitable. The rabies problem is handled by prevention (vaccination of animals and people in high-risk groups) and post-exposition prophylaxis immediately after the exposure to pathogen. Most successful combination of vaccination is consisted of human anti-rabies immunoglobulin and viral particles isolated from human-cell cultures. Rabies presumably originated from Europe, and today is present on every continent except Australia.
