Abstract

U radu se susrećemo s arapskom matematikom, točnije: matematikom srednjevjekovnog islamskog svijeta, i njezinim doprinosima koji su nam vidljivi sve do danas. Svoj uspon arapska matematika započinje nakon osnivanja čuvene Kuće mudrosti u Bagdadu. Prvo poglavlje rada nam daje pregled kako su Arapi preuzeli indijske brojke. U 13. stoljeću je Fibonacci svojim djelom Liber Abbaci te brojke predstavio Europi te su one nazvane arapskim, iako su sami Arapi isticali da je riječ o indijskom otkriću. U drugom poglavlju rada za svakog od velikih arapskih matematičara poput al-Khwarizmija, Abu'l Wafe, Omar Khayyama, al-Tusija, al-Kashija i drugih navodimo njihove biografske podatke. Nadalje, za svakoga od njih navodimo njihova otkrića i doprinose u matematici te drugim znanstvenim disciplinama. Posljednje poglavlje rada sadrži usporedbu navedenih arapskih matematičkih doprinosa s osnovnoškolskim i srednjoškolskim programima matematike uz komentare o integraciji povijesti matematike u nastavu matematike.

Abstract (english)

In this diploma thesis we describe Arabic mathematics, more precisely: mathematics of the medieval Islamic world, and its contributions that are visible even today. Its rise begins with the founding of the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. The first chapter describes how Arabs adopted Indian numerals. In the 13th century Fibonacci introduced them to Europe in his work Liber Abbaci and later the numerals were given the name Arabic, even if Arabs themselves emphasized their Indian origin. In the second chapter we present biographies of all major Arabic mathematicians, like al-Khwarizmi, Abu’l Wafa, Omar Khayyam, al-Tusi, al-Kashi etc. For all of them we also describe their achievements and contributions to mathematics and other fields of science. Finally, we compare the Arabic mathematical achievements with contemporary primary and secondary educational programs in mathematics, including comments of integration of history of mathematics in the mathematics classroom.
