Abstract

Konvencionalne metode hlađenja atoma u slobodnom prostoru se oslanjaju na optičko pobuđivanje atoma i naknadnu spontanu emisiju fotona gdje se disipacija ostvaruje pobuđivanjem atoma crveno ugođenom svjetlošću (manje frekvencije i energije) od atomskog prijelaza, a spontanom emisijom se emitira više energije. Takvim Dopplerovim hlađenjem atome možemo spustiti samo do energije koja odgovara vremenu života pobuđenog stanja. U ovom radu ćemo proučiti alternativnu metodu hlađenja koja koristi rezonator u kojem se atomi ne hlade spontanom emisijom, već interakcijom sa elektromagnetskim valovima unutar rezonatora. Ova vrsta hlađenja uzrokuje pojavu novih kvantnih mehanizama i omogućava hlađenje puno šire klase čestica jer ne zahtijeva jednostavnu elektronsku strukturu povoljnu za hlađenje laserom. Proći ćemo kroz fiziku optičkog rezonatora, njegovu izradu, karakterizaciju i buduću primjenu u području hladnih atoma.

Abstract (english)

Conventional laser cooling methods rely on atom excitation by red detuned light (of lower frequency and energy than the atomic electron transition) and subsequent higher energy spontaneous emission. This so-called Doppler cooling can only cool down atoms down to the temperatures defined by the transition lifetime. In this thesis an alternative method of cooling will be examined, one not using energy dissipation by spontaneous emission, but rather atom and electromagnetic wave interaction inside a resonator. This interaction brings about new quantum effects and allows cooling of a much broader class of particles, not requiring an electron structure conducive to laser cooling. The physics behind optical resonators will be explained, as well as their manufacture, characterization and future application in the field of cold atom physics.
