Abstract

Najveći broj eukariotskog fitoplanktona koji obitava u Jadranu je iz skupine dijatomeja. Pretpostavlja se da postoji preko 12,500 vrsta dijatomeja i odgovorne su za 40% primarne proizvodnje u morima te čine gotovo polovicu organskog materijala koji se nalazi u oceanima. Ljušturice su njihovo pravo obilježje koje se preklapaju poput kutije i poklopca. Reproduktivni ciklus dijatomeja odvija se izmjenom spolnog i nespolnog razmnožavanja. Naglim razmnožavanjem algi dolazi do cvjetanja mora koje dovodi do hipoksičnih uvjeta i razvoja toksičnih dinoflagelata i dijatomeja koje imaju negativan utjecaj na vodeni okoliš. Iako dijatomeje imaju ogroman utjecaj na cijeli ekosustav, znanje o njihovoj biologiji i ekologiji je nedostatno. Potrebno je više ulagati u ispitivanja i istraživanja Jadranskoga mora te ulagati u znanje i interes novih budućih stručnjaka.

Abstract (english)

Diatoms make up the largest number of eukaryotic phytoplankton living in the Adriatic sea. It is estimated that there are over 12,500 species of diatoms which are responsible for 40% of primary production and make up almost half of the organic material in the oceans. Their real feature are shells that overlap like a box and lid. Diatoms reproduce by alternating sexual and asexual reproduction. The rapid reproduction of diatoms leads to the red tide in sea. Red tide leads to hypoxic conditions and development of toxic diatom and dinoflagellate, which have a negative impact on the aquatic environment. Although diatoms have a huge impact on the entire ecosystem, knowledge of their biology is insufficient. it is necessary to invest more in research of the Adriatic Sea and to invest in the knowledge of new future diatom experts.
