Abstract

Dana 23. ožujka 2011. godine Japan je zadesila jedna od najvećih prirodnih katastrofa u
novijoj povijesti. Snažan potres, s epicentrom u blizini najvećeg japanskog otoka Honshua, izazvao
je tsunami s najrazornijim učinkom za Tohoku regiju na sjeveroistoku Honshua. Tsunami je
potopio generatore za hlađenje reaktora nuklearne elektrane rezultirajući havarijom nuklearne
elektrane Fukushima Daiichi. Potres i tsunami izmijenili su geomorfološka obilježja dijelova
Japana te ostavili brojne izravne i neizravne posljedice u japanskom društvu – od brojnih ljudskih
žrtava, goleme materijalne štete, do ekonomskih posljedica, zdravstvenih problema i onečišćenja
okoliša. Nakon potresa, japansko društvo je donijelo odgovarajuću strategiju oporavka te planove
za smanjenje opasnosti od budućih potresa s obzirom da se Japan nalazi na seizmički vrlo aktivnom
području. Ovaj rad dat će temeljit pregled uzroka i posljedica Tohoku potresa te planova za obnovu
i strategija ublažavanja opasnosti od budućih potresa.

Abstract (english)

On March 23, 2011, Japan was hit by one of the largest natural disasters in recent
history. A strong earthquake, with epicenter near Japan's largest island of Honshu, caused a
tsunami with the most devastating effect for the Tohoku region in northeastern Honshu. The
tsunami sank the reactor cooling generators of the nuclear power plant resulting in the failure of
the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The quake and tsunami changed the geomorphological
features of parts of Japan and left numerous direct and indirect consequences in Japanese society
– from numerous human casualties, huge material damage, to economic consequences, health
problems and environmental pollution. After the earthquake, Japanese society has adopted an
appropriate recovery strategy and plans to reduce the risk of future earthquakes given that Japan
is in a very seismically active area. This paper will provide a thorough overview of the causes and
consequences of the Tohoku earthquake, as well as recovery plans and mitigation strategies for
future earthquakes.
