Abstract

U ovome radu opisuju se temeljna saznanja o rekombinaciji virusnih genomskih RNA u svrhu
isticanja važnosti istraživanja mehanizama te biološkog značaja i evolucijskih posljedica toga
fenomena. RNA-rekombinacija u virusa može dovesti do pojava novih sojeva i varijanti koji mogu
imati teške posljedice na ljudsko zdravlje, poljoprivredu i ravnotežu ekosustava, stoga je evaluacija
opasnosti i razvoj novih metodq za predviđanje budućeg tijeka evolucije RNA-virusa putem
rekombinacije genomskih virusnih RNA od velikog značaja. Razjašnjavanje mehanizama
rekombinacije virusnih genomskih RNA te uključenost različitih domaćinskih faktora je, stoga,
jedan od prvih i najvažnijih koraka u utvrđivanju utjecaja rekombinacije na evoluciju RNA-virusa.
Osim rekombinacije, u radu je kratki osvrt i na preraspodjelu dijelova segmentiranih virusnih
RNA-genoma te posljedice toga fenomena.

Abstract (english)

In this thesis, the fundamental findings regarding recombination of viral genomic RNAs are
described for the purposes of accentuating the importance of investigating these mechanisms and
biological, as well as evolutionary consequences of this process. RNA recombination in viruses
can bring about the appearance of new strains and variants which can, in turn, have serious effects
on human health, agriculture, and the balance of ecosystems. Therefore, the evaluation of the risks
and development of novel methods of predicting the future trajectories of RNA virus evolution via
genomic RNA recombination is of utmost importance. The elucidation of mechanisms underlying
recombination of viral genomic RNA and the involvement of various host factors is, therefore, one
of the first and most important steps in determining the effects of recombination on the evolution
of RNA viruses. Besides recombination, this thesis also briefly touches upon reassortment of
segmented viral RNA genomes and its consequences.
