Abstract

Bioantropologija je znanstvena disciplina koja proučava ljudske koštane ostatke u arheološkom
kontekstu. Fizički stresori, nedostatak nutrijenata, bolesti i traume mogu ostaviti jasne znakove na
kostima pa analiza koštanih ostataka može dati uvid u životne uvjete arheoloških populacija. Cilj ovog
diplomskog rada je primjenom metoda bioantropološke analize utvrditi populacijske i patološke
značajke ljudskih koštanih ostataka s rimskodobnog nalazišta Ozad Arene u Puli te utvrditi postoje li
razlike u odnosu na slične rimskodobne populacije i suvremene populacije. Analizirani su ljudski
osteološki ostatci iz ukupno 29 grobova za koje je procijenjeno da potječu iz razdoblja od 1. do 4.
stoljeća. Prilikom analize svakog kostura određena je starost u trenutku smrti, spol, prisutni koštani
elementi te postojanje trauma, degenerativnih promjena, dentalnih i skeletnih patologija. Velik
mortalitet djece, visoka učestalost karijesa i metaboličkih patologija te osteoartritis i Schmorlovi defekti
ukazuju na lošije životne uvjete usporedno s rimskim populacijama na području Hrvatske. U rimskoj
Puli metabolički i fizički stres je bio sveprisutan, pogotovo u djetinjstvu.

Abstract (english)

Bioanthropology is a field of research that studies human skeletal remains in an archeological
context. Environmental and physical stress factors, poor nutrition, disease and trauma can leave trace
on bones. These traces can provide information about past living conditions. The aim of this work is to
determine the demographic and pathological characteristics of human remains from the archeological
site of Ozad Arene in Pula using the methods of bioanthropological analysis. It will also be investigated
whether the site differs from other archaeological sites from the Roman period and from modern
populations. In total, human skeletal remains from 29 graves dating from the 1st to the 4th century AD
were analysed. Sex and age were determined for each analysed skeleton, and the presence of trauma,
degenerative changes, dental and skeletal pathologies were noted. The high infant mortality and high
rates of dental caries and metabolic diseases, as well as the presence of osteoarthritis and Schmorl′s
nodules, indicate that the Roman inhabitants of Pula probably lived in worse living conditions than
people at other Roman sites from Croatia. Metabolic and physical stress was omnipresent and a had
great impact on the population, especially in childhood.
