Kalcitni nanofosili su anorganski ostaci jednostaničnih algi čije su stanice (kokosfere) pokrivene kalcitnim pločicama (kokoliti) različite veličine i oblika, koje nose na površini. Zbog njihove veličine (od 2 do 25 μm), brojnosti, izraženog provincijalizam, morfološka raz-nolikost i brze evolucije, kokolitoforidi su jako važni za biostratigrafske i paleoekološke (paleoklimatske,paleooceanografske) rekonstrukcije. Abstract (english)

Calcite nannofossils are inorganic remains of unicellular algae whose cells (cocospheres) are covered with calcite plates of various sizes and shapes (coccoliths), which they carry on their surface. Due to their size (from 2 to 25 μm), their abundance, their pronounced provinciality, their morphological diversity and their rapid evolution, coccolithophores are very important for biostratigraphic and paleoecological (paleoclimatic, paleoceanographic) reconstructions.
