Abstract

Prostorna segregacija u Sjevernoj Irskoj posljedica je povijesnih događanja. Sukobljene strane čine katolici, koji se pretežito izjašnjavaju kao Irci, i protestanti, koji su pretežito Britanci. Uzrok sukoba nastao je u 17. stoljeću prisilnim doseljavanjem britanskog stanovništva. Već je u tim godinama jasno izražena segregacija protestanata i katolika u određenim gradovima. Prostorna segregacija posebno je izražena u velikim gradovima, kao što su Belfast i Londonderry. U njima se nalaze izrazito segregirane četvrti, neke od kojih funkcioniraju kao enklave gdje je zabranjen ulaz članovima druge zajednice. Takav način života uvelike utječe na prostorno kretanje i percepciju sigurnosti stanovništva te uzrokuje povećanje netrpeljivosti između zajednica. Diskriminacija je u gradovima česta, a povjerenje između dviju zajednica vrlo krhko. Abstract (english)

The spatial segregation in Northern Ireland is a consequence of historical events. The parties to the conflict are Catholics, who mostly declare themselves as Irish, and Protestants, who are predominantly British. The cause of the conflict arose in the 17th century, following the forced immigration of the British population. The conflicts had a stimulating effect on the growth of segregation and on the collective consciousness of the population in terms of increasing intolerance towards the other community. Spatial segregation is particularly pronounced in large cities such as Belfast and Londonderry. They are home to highly segregated neighborhoods, some of which function as enclaves where members of another community are not allowed to enter. Such a way of life significantly affects the mobility and sense of security of the population and leads to an increase in intolerance between communities. Discrimination in the cities is widespread and trust between the two communities is very fragile.
