Abstract

Moonlighting proteini obuhvaćaju set multifunkcionalnih proteina koji izvršavaju dvije ili više biokemijskih funkcija, a nisu nastali genskim fuzijama, alternativnim prekrajanjima, proteolitičkim fragmentima ili su promiskuitetni enzimi. Moonlighting proteini sa sekundarnom funkcijom na staničnoj membrani su vrlo često nađeni slučajno tijekom proteomskih istraživanja. More unutarstanične proteine i eventualne sličnosti s izvanstaničnim proteinima. Iako su neki mehanizmi funkcija razrađeniji kao u receptora za plazminogen, još puno MPCS-a ima nepoznate ili dovoljno nerazjašnjene funkcije. Uz napredak bioinformatike, omogućena je brža i preciznija identifikacija MPCS-a, što bi moglo dovesti do nalaženja većeg broja MPCS-a, i do razumijevanja njihove evolucije. Abstract (english)

Moonlighting proteins comprise a subset of multifunctional proteins that perform two or more biochemical functions, that are not due to gene fusion, alternative splicing, proteolytic fragments or promiscuous enzymes activities. Intracellular proteins that moonlight on the cell surface have been identified by chance in proteomic researches. The number of new MPCSs is growing, and therefore their primary and secondary functions, differences with intracellular proteins, and possible... More similarities with extracellular proteins were investigated. Although we know some mechanism more elaborate, as the receptor for plasminogen, many of MPCSs has unknown or unexplained functions. The bioinformatics progresses allow faster and precise identification of the MPCSs, which could lead to discovery of a larger number of MPCSs, and to understanding of their evolution. One hypothesis is that gene duplication may have a role in the origin of the MPCSs, but it does not have to be the only explanation.
