Abstract
Panthera tigris jedna je od najvećih vrsta mačaka na svijetu. Pripada carstvu Animalia, razredu Mammalia i porodici Felidae. Rod Panthera, u koji uz tigra spadaju lav, leopard, snježni leopard i jaguar vuče porijeklo od zajedničkog pretka iz kasnog Miocena, zajedno s rodom Neofelis. U ovom radu izložen je kratki pregled evolucijskog tijeka nastanka porodice Panthera i vrste Panthera tigris, kao i njezine morfološke odlike i podvrste. Tigrovi su na popisu kritično ugroženih vrsta te su u konstantnoj opasnosti zbog krivolova, kao i zbog fragmentacije i gubitka staništa. U posljednjih 50 godina broj tigrova u divljini drastično se smanjio, a čak tri od devet podvrsta su izumrle.
Abstract (english)
Panthera tigris is one of the largest cat species on the planet. It belongs to the empire of Animalia, class Mammalia and the Felidae family. The Panthera genus that holds tigers, lions, leopards, snow leopards and jaguars, has a common ancestor with the Neofelis genus which lived in the late Miocene. In this article I will present a short overview of the evolutionary flow of the Panthera genus and the Panthera tigris species, as well as its morphological features and subspecies. Tigers are on the critically endangered list and are in constant danger because of habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as poaching. In the last 50 years the nuber of tigers in the wild has been drastically reduced, and three of the nine subspecies have become extinct.
