Abstract

Hermafroditizam je pojava funkcionalnih reproduktivnih sistema oba spola u jednoj
jedinki. Hermafroditi su česti među beskralježnjacima, ali ne među kralješnjacima kod kojih
pojava oba spola u jednoj jedinki nije funkcionalna i naziva se interseks. Iznimka su neke vrste
riba koje su prirodno hermafroditi.
Ovaj seminar prolazi evoluciju reproduktivnih sistema kralješnjaka kako bi ukazao na
varijabilnost i plastičnost reproduktivnih strategija kralješnjaka. Usporedbom filogenetskih
skupina kralješnjaka može se primijetiti da gubitak hermafroditizma i juvenilnog interseksa
prati pojava viviparije kao reproduktivne strategije. Viviparnost je posljedica specijalizacije
Mullerove cijevi što navodi na zaključak da veća specijalizacija reproduktivnog sustava
sprječava pojavu hermafroditizma i prelaska iz jednog spola u drugi.

Abstract (english)

Hermaphroditism is the presence of both sexes in one individual. Hermaphrodites are
rare among vertebrates and the state in which more than one sex is present in one individual is
not functional and is called intersex.
This paper covers the evolution of reproductive modes in vertebrates to show the
variability and plasticity of vertebrate reproductive strategies. By comparing phylogenetic
groups of vertebrates it is apparent that the loss of hermaphroditism and juvenile intersex is
followed by the emergence of vivipary as a mode of reproduction. Since vivipary is enabled by
the specialization of the Mullerian duct we can conclude that with the greater specialization of
the reproductive system, it is less likely that hermaphroditism will occur as a reproductive
strategy.
