Abstract

Teške nabijene čestice, za razliku od fotona i elektrona, većinu svoje energije deponiraju u materijal na samom kraju putanje. Stoga, raspodjela doze (energija apsorbirana u jediničnoj masi materijala) po dubini u materijalu ima izraženi, jaki vrh (Braggov vrh) na kraju putanje pri čemu položaj vrha ovisi o početnoj energiji upadne čestice. Ta se fizikalna posebnost teško nabijenih čestica koristi u radioterapiji te se odabirom odgovarajuće energije snopa nabijenih čestica (u radioterapiji najčešće protoni ili ioni ugljika), energija deponira na željeno mjesto (tumor) uz maksimalnu poštedu ostalog, zdravog tkiva. U radu će se opisati fizikalni i osnovni radiobiološki principi vezani za radioterapiju teškim nabijenim česticama te će se objasniti razlike (prednosti i mane) u odnosu na konvencionalnu radioterapiju fotonima i elektronima. Također, prikazat će se razlike (prednosti i mane) protonske radioterapije i radioterapije ugljikom.

Abstract (english)

Heavy charged particles, unlike photons and electrons, deposit most of their initial energy at the end of their path. Because of that, dose-depth distribution (dose is energy absorbed per unit mass of the material) has a strong peak (Bragg peak) at the end of the path. The position of the peak depends on the initial energy of the penetrating particle. That physical property of heavy charged particles is used in radiation therapy (radiotherapy). Choosing the appropriate energy of the beam of heavy charged particles (in radiotherapy most common particles used are protons and carbon ions), we can deposit the energy to the desired place (tumor), sparing the healthy tissue. In this thesis, physical and basic biological principles will be described that are important for heavy charged particle therapy and the differences (advantages and disadvantages) between conventional radiotherapy (photons and electrons) and heavy charged particle therapy will be explained. The differences between proton radiotherapy and carbon-ion radiotherapy will also be discussed.
