Abstract

EuMnBi2 i YbMnBi2 navode se kao eksperimentalni primjeri topoloških materijala, tj. materijala čije su elektronske vrpce opisane ne-trivijalnom topologijom, u suvremenim istraživanjima u području fizike čvrstog stanja. Ova dva spoja su izovalentna što znači da dijele slične kemijske formule i formiraju isti broj veza s okolnim atomima. Unatoč tome svojstvu oni ne kristaliziraju u iste kristalne strukture te imaju različita svojstva. U nastavku rada dat će se opis teorija otpornosti i magnetizma, koji su relevantni za ova dva spoja, i specifičnih svojstava EuMnBi2 i YbMnBi2. Diskutirat će se mehanizam rasta jediničnih kristala i proces sinteze te komentirati rezultati sinteza i način na koji se sinteza optimizirala. Dobiveni jedinični kristali karakterizirani su koristeći razne eksperimentalne tehnike čiji će glavni principi rada biti opisani. Bit će komentirana kvaliteta sintetiziranih kristala i kako se ona mijenjala s optimizacijom metode sinteze. Prezentirani su dobiveni rezultati karakterizacije i uspoređeni s rezultatima iz literature.

Abstract (english)

EuMnBi2 i YbMnBi2 are given as experimental examples of topological materials, materials which have electronic bands described by a non-trivial topology, in current research in the field of condensed matter physics. The two compounds are isovalent, which means that they share similar chemical formulas and form the same number of bonds with the surrounding atoms. Despite this property, they crystallize in different crystalline structures and have very different properties. The following work presents theories of resistivity magnetism relevent for these compounds, the specific properties of EuMnBi2 and YbMnBi2 and the influence of the difference in their crystalline structures over their properties. The mechanism of single crystal growth and the process of synthesis will be discussed in detail, as well as the experimental results and the optimization of the method. The compounds were characterized using various experimental techniques whose main working principle will be described. The quality of synthesized crystals will be discussed, as well as how it changed as the method of synthesis was optimized. The results of characterization are presented and compared to the corresponding results from the literature.
