Abstract

Razvojem genetičkog inženjerstva i biotehnologije, genetički modificirane bakterije postale su nezamjenjive u proizvodnji mnogih industrijskih i medicinskih spojeva. S ciljem što sigurnije upotrebe, mnogo truda se ulaže u razvoj mehanizama za obuzdavanje koji bi spriječili širenje GMO bakterija i prijenos rekombinantnih gena u srodne sojeve divljeg tipa u slučaju bijega takvih bakterija u okoliš . More standardnoj biokemiji živih organizama i mehanizmima nove generacije, koji su tek na početku svog razvoja, a temelje se na sintetičkoj biologiji. Navedena su glavna svojstva koja definiraju takve mehanizme kao i mnogi nedostatci, koji nažalost, još uvijek postoje. Mehanizmi sa stopostotnom efikasnošću bi jednog dana mogli omogućiti uporabu GMO bakterija u otvorenim sustavima pa čak i u živim organizmima, te možda, bar malo promijeniti stav javnosti o upotrebi GMO tehnologije. Abstract (english)

Huge development in the fields of genetic engineering and biotechnology has made genetically modified bacteria to become irreplaceable in production of industrial and medical compounds. With the goal of raising safety of their use, a lot of an effort has been put to design biocontainment mechanisms which would prevent spreading of GMO bacteria and transfer of recombinant genes into wild type relatives in the case of the escape into the environment. More known biocontainment mechanisms based on standard biochemistry of living organisms and new generation mechanisms which are at the beginning of their development, and are based on synthetic biology. Basic traits that define these mechanisms are listed, as well as many shortcomings that unfortunately still exist. Biocontainment mechanisms with a hundred percent efficiency could one day enable use of GMO bacteria in open environments and even living organisms and maybe, just a little, change the public opinion on the use of GMO technologies.
